Revolutionising Urban Gardening: Mohammed Javed Alam's Hydroponic Mission in Patna

Report:- Udhav Krishna/Patna
In the bustling city of Patna, where urban expansion often overshadows green spaces. A quiet yet powerful revolution is taking root. At the forefront of this green movement is Mohammed Javed Alam, an environmental enthusiast who has taken on the challenge of transforming city rooftops into verdant, sustainable gardens using the innovative method of Hydroponics. His own home is now a thriving example of this soil-free farming technique, where greenery covers every corner from the rooftop to the balconies. Javed's passion for Sustainable living led him to leave his job three decades ago and devote himself to Popularising hydroponic farming, a method that grows plants without soil and with minimal Water.

The Birth of a Green Dream: From Educator to Environmentalist
Javed’s journey began 30 years ago when he decided to quit his stable job as an educator at The Shri Krishna Science Centre in Patna.
"I saw the effects of urbanisation everywhere, trees being cut down, green spaces disappearing," Javed recalls. "I realised we needed to find ways to bring nature back to our cities."
Inspired by this realisation, Javed left his job to explore the potential of hydroponics, a method of growing plants using water, nutrients, and alternative mediums such as sand or cocopeat instead of soil. Hydroponics intrigued Javed because it offered a solution to the challenges of urban living, such as limited gardening space and water scarcity.
"The idea that we could grow plants with minimal water and without soil seemed revolutionary," He explains.
Determined to make a difference, Javed began experimenting with hydroponics on his rooftop, which soon transformed into a lush green space.

Creating a Green Haven: Javed’s Hydroponic House
Today, Javed’s home is a testament to the power of hydroponic gardening. Every available Space from the rooftop to the balconies and even the interior is covered with flourishing Plants.
"I started with a few ornamental plants on my rooftop and soon realised the cooling effect it had on the house." Javed shares with Udhav Krishna. He adds "The temperature inside my home dropped significantly, and the air quality improved."
His rooftop is now a vibrant oasis of greenery, filled with ornamental plants, flowering varieties and even vegetables, all grown Hydroponically.
This green transformation extends throughout his house. Javed’s living room, for example, is adorned with lush green plants that not only purify the air but also create a serene, calming Environment.

Hydroponics: A Revolutionary Solution for Urban Gardening
Hydroponics, the method Javed champions, involves growing plants without soil by using Alternative mediums like water, sand, and coconut coir (cocopeat). This technique not only Conserves water but also allows urban residents to grow plants in limited spaces.
"Hydroponics is perfect for cities like Patna, where space is scarce, and water is a precious Resource," Javed explains. "With this method, you can grow a variety of plants from flowers to vegetables in a small area without the mess of soil."
Unlike traditional gardening, hydroponic plants continuously draw nourishment from water, making them less dependent On frequent watering.
Innovations in Hydroponic Farming: Developing Biofort M
After leaving his job, Javed dedicated himself to refining the hydroponic technique. He developed a unique nutrient solution called Biofort M, designed to provide plants with all the Essential nutrients they need to thrive. "Just one millilitre of Biofort M mixed in a litre of water Can sustain a plant up to 30 to 40 centimetres tall for a year," Javed explains. This innovation Has made hydroponic farming more accessible and affordable for the average city dweller. In addition to Biofort M, Javed also developed his organic fertilisers using materials like Crushed stones, small pebbles, and sand. "These fertilisers provide a sustainable way to Nourish plants without relying on chemical inputs," he says. His efforts have enabled many Patna residents to turn their rooftops and balconies into green sanctuaries.

Making Hydroponics Affordable and Accessible
Javed’s approach to hydroponics is not only environmentally friendly but also cost-effective." Growing plants hydroponically costs about 04 to 05 rupees per plant, which is minimally Compared to traditional gardening methods," he says. "Additionally, you can sell these plants for anywhere between 200 to 400 rupees, creating a sustainable source of income."
Hydroponics also helps reduce water consumption significantly. Javed points out, "In traditional gardening, the water requirement is much higher, and plants can die if left unattended for a few days. But hydroponic plants continue to draw nourishment from water, making it ideal for people with busy lives."
Spreading the Green Message: Community Outreach and Education
Javed’s efforts have inspired many residents of Patna to adopt hydroponics. One such Resident, Priya Sharma, shares, "I was inspired by Javed’s workshops on hydroponics. I started with a few ornamental plants and now my terrace is filled with lush greenery. The house stays cooler and I feel I am contributing positively to the environment."
To spread awareness, Javed collaborates with local organisations and conducts workshops On sustainable gardening practices. "Education is key to fostering change," he asserts."Once people understand the benefits of hydroponics, they are more likely to embrace it."
His workshops, conducted in partnership with The Nature Club of India, have played a crucial role in educating residents about the benefits of hydroponic gardening.

Support from the Community: In Building a Greener Patna
While Javed has been the driving force behind this green revolution, he acknowledges the Community's role in supporting his mission. The Nature Club of India, Patna, has been instrumental in helping residents get started with hydroponic gardening. "The club provided Initial resources and support for many residents," Javed says. "We also collaborated with local government bodies to promote sustainable practices."
Ramesh Singh, a club member, adds, "Javed’s passion for sustainability is infectious. His Dedication to promoting hydroponics has inspired many of us to rethink our gardening habits. We've seen the benefits from lower water bills to more comfortable living spaces."

Looking Ahead: A Vision for a Greener City
Javed’s mission is far from complete. He envisions a future where hydroponics becomes a common practice in urban homes across India. "I hope to see every rooftop in Patna covered With green plants, cooling our homes and purifying our air," he says. To achieve this vision, he plans to continue his educational efforts and expand collaborations with local Organisations and government bodies.

A Sustainable Future Through Hydroponics
Mohammed Javed Alam’s innovative use of hydroponics has not only transformed his own Home into a green paradise but has also inspired countless others to do the same. His Journey from an educator to an environmental pioneer demonstrates the profound impact of Small, thoughtful actions. Through hydroponics, Javed has shown that even in the most urbanised environments, it's possible to reconnect with nature, reduce environmental impact and build a sustainable future one rooftop garden at a time.
